What is the annual membership fee of $85 for?

This is for the annual membership to our parent organization, the SKC. The purpose of this fee provides access to the administrative aspects of being part of the organization. This includes such things as attendance records, testing records and tracking, performance standards and instructional guidance.

There are uniforms which you offer on your website. Are there less expensive alternatives?

Yes, there are less expensive uniforms available. There are many sources for these. A quick search on amazon will show many less expensive options. The uniforms we offer are quality, durable and proven over time and experience. Some less expensive options tend to wear out more quickly. Students have the option of purchasing whichever uniforms they prefer. It is important to note that we use only traditional white karate uniforms in Shotokan.

Where are the classes held?

Our classes are held in Custer SD at the Trail House. This is located at 148 Gordon Street, Custer, SD 57730. The Trail House is located just off of US Highway 385 South, across from the SD Department of Transportation Facility.

What is the monthly fee of $40 for?

This fee covers your training through the month.

What makes Shotokan different?

Shotokan is a traditional Japanese karate style which places a strong emphasis on the technical aspects of the art form. Proper execution of techniques is a primary factor in practice. Shotokan is equally physically and mentally challenging.

Are there age requirements for Karate?

No, there are no age requirements. However, when it comes to children, their development physically and mentally should be at a point where they have the ability to understand and follow instructions. Typically ages 6 and up are appropriate for karate training. There is no upper age limit.

Can people with physical limitations practice karate?

Absolutely. Karate is beneficial for everyone especially those with such limitations. Karate is primarily an individual practice. In training, students have the ability to work within their limitations. Karate is focused on movement and control and can be performed regardless of physical restrictions.

What level of physical fitness is required to start karate?

Any level is acceptable. The most important thing is to get started.

What is the rank / belt progression from beginner to black belt in Shotokan Karate?

The time frame to advance from beginner (white belt) to black belt is typically 4-6 years. For some it may take longer. Why is karate practiced barefoot?

We practice barefoot because a key element in Shotokan karate is our connection to the ground. Practicing barefoot allows us to establish a good connection to the ground to better execute techniques. Practicing barefoot provides less slipping in practice.

Is Shotokan the best martial art for self defense?

Shotokan is an excellent choice for self defense. It is important to keep in mind however that all martial arts provide improved skill for self defense. The real key to being better prepared for self defense rests in consistent practice over time. This continuous improvement in skill provides a better outcome.

Will I have to fight other people in training?

Controlled sparring is a part of karate practice. It is conducted in a highly controlled environment to ensure minimal risk to all students.

How long does it take to achieve a black belt?

Typically 4-6 years of consistent and diligent practice.

What are the benefits of practicing karate?

There are many benefits. It is important to note, the benefits we get from karate are directly related to the effort we put into it. The benefits include: Physical fitness Mental fitness Self confidence Discipline Better control over mind and body Increased awareness

What is the history of Shotokan Karate and the BHSKC?

Shotokan karate was founded in the 1920's by Karate Master Gichin Funakoshi. Master Funakoshi lived in Okinawa, learning self defense along the way. He brought his style of self defense to Japan and formalized it so it could be taught in a more widespread fashion. He called it Shotokan Karate. Master Funakoshi's protege, M. Nakayama, is credited with spreading this art form around the world. Under the leadership of M. Nakayama some of the most highly skilled karate practitioners were developed including Sensei Enoeda. Sensei Enoeda is responsible for spreading Shotokan to the UK. He moved to London and opened a Dojo there. Sensei Mazhari moved to London for the sole purpose of training under Sensei Enoeda. He trained with Sensei Enoeda for several years before starting the SKC in 1982. Sensei Mazhari is an 8th degree black belt and has practiced Shotokan karate for more than 60 years. He has instructed thousands of students from all over the world. He is widely recognized as a Master of Shotokan karate. He currently teaches in Rapid City, SD. Chuck Aulner began training with Master Mazhari in 2021. His advancement in karate was faster than most. Master Mazhari selected Chuck Aulner for the instructor trainee program in 2024 (an intense 2 year program). Chuck currently instructs at the Black Hills Shotokan Karate Center in Custer, SD.
